Overview

Flying Solo 101 is an online coaching program designed to assist students who are making the transition from living at home to living on campus. It encompasses the summer before college, through the college years, up to and including landing that first job. The spring 2020 launch, to register students for the inaugural summer program, coincided with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic. The project was to include creation of a mark, brochure and WordPress® website. However, the uncertainty of how colleges and universities would respond to on-campus learning put the program on hold at the point of distribution of the brochure.

Deliverables

The vision for the presentation of the program is uncluttered and targeted. The intention is to appeal to a student’s desire for life on campus, and provide an overview that gives parents piece of mind so they register their student for the program.

The brand deliverable is the creation of a “mark” for the Flying Solo 101 name and a WordPress® website. The print deliverable is a two-sided brochure.

The purpose of the brochure was to pique interest and direct people to the Flying Solo 101 website for detailed information and to register. To pique interest, a photo search was conducted to find images that appeal to students—moving on campus and enjoying campus life—to graduation, to appeal to the parents. Verbiage was kept to a minimum to focus on the key takeaways: the program is online, it covers four critical areas, it starts in July, it asks questions to engage students and parents, it shares the credentials of the coaches and it directs parents to the website.

The photo search yielded strong options, however, each photo required editing to deliver the targeted message it was selected for. The photo on the brochure front was edited to eliminate distracting colors and tie the students’ clothing to the brand colors. The student photo on the back required fusing multiple photos to provide the needed width and orientation of the students.
