Robin Lybeck Design Our Journey Together

In this month’s case study, we meet MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue (MABTR). It is a non-profit that finds safe and happy forever homes for unwanted and mistreated Boston Terriers and Boston Terrier mixes. They wanted to give a memory book to the people providing new forever homes. This 54-page, full-color, spiral bound book records the journey from first meeting to last goodbye, and all the adventures in between.

MABTR is passionate about their mission but their budget was modest. It didn’t cover the cost of hiring an illustrator. But that isn’t the end of the story thanks to graphic design!

Creating a one-of-a-kind book by combining stock illustrations

The process to design the book started with searching the Adobe Stock library. My search included dog illustrations, color and typography styles that would convey the fun, energetic feeling MABTR sought to capture. In all, more than 30 individual stock components were used to create this one-of-a-kind book.

Once the pieces were assembled, next came creating a delightful page/section layout that would be repeated throughout the book. Changes in the color palette with each introductory page—like the one pictured above—announce a new section. There are nine in total. Since the book is spiral-bound, it lays flat making it perfect for writing and pasting in photographs and mementos, creating a treasure trove of memories to be enjoyed for years to come.

This fun project demonstrates how graphic design delivers one-of-a-kind illustrations, even if you have a modest budget—The Design Difference!
